So you want to master your online presence to become a social media mogul, huh? You’re not the only one; many try, but few actually succeed.

Thankfully, one of the lucky few to make it big on social media is sharing some coveted advice. YouTube personality, Instagram influencer and Vine superstar Zach King spoke with Adweek about his unconventional fame and four tips he has for aspiring Internet celebrities.

Define your channel.

Who are you? That’s the ultimate question you need to answer in order to produce quality content and attract a following. King’s video magic and sleight of hand helped propel him to fame because he picked something interesting and unique that he enjoyed doing. Find something you enjoy or pick a subject you’re an expert on and bring that into play across your media platforms. You need to be a source of something.

Collaboration is key.

You’ll need help from other influencers and brands in order to maintain your status and gain an audience. Let them help you find followers and vice versa; this cross-promotion will benefit both you and your partnering brands.

Take constructive feedback.

If your followers aren’t connecting with your content, listen to what they want. If you’re working with a brand that is critical, cooperate to ensure the best final product that works for both of you.

It’s okay to say no.

If brands want to work with you as an influencer and you don’t agree with their platform or message, it’s okay to say no. Part of knowing who you are is knowing what you want to represent. Don’t be afraid to turn down a brand that doesn’t fit with your aesthetic or moral values.
