#contenthacks: How (And Why) You Should Avoid Cross-Posting

No one said that creating great content was an easy task. It takes time to develop engaging work and properly deliver it across multiple platforms. Sure, it’s easy to be tempted to post the same copy on all of your social channels, but we urge you to think twice. Below are three key things to remember about cross-posting the same content through social media.

1. What works in one place won’t work as effectively somewhere else
Your different social media platforms are exactly that, different. It’s important that your content strategy is just as diverse. The video you post on Snapchat might not be clean and crisp enough to perform well on Facebook, for example. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of each platform and bend your content to fit appropriately.

2. Your closest followers will see right through it
You’ve done a great job of building brand loyalty among your followers. Such a great job, in fact, that your biggest fans are following you across multiple platforms. If your posts are identical on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, not only will your message become too pushy, but you’ll look lazy. A little diversity in your posts can go a long way (and can help maintain and grow your follower count, as well).

3. Cross-promote, don’t cross-post
There are times when it’s okay to post about the same topic more than once. For example, if your company is hosting a public event, you should be leveraging it for social. But, that doesn’t mean the look and feel of each post should be the same. Keep things engaging by initiating a countdown, or highlighting the various guest speakers that will be in attendance. That way, your fans will learn more about more about your fête without feeling fatigued from seeing the same message over and over again.
