Posted On September 6th, 2017 | 3:51pm EST

Establishing a relationship with your audience has never been more important than it is today. With social media and a world of information at our fingertips, the opportunities for connection are limitless. This can be both a challenge and an advantage, but the best way to initiate that relationship and use it to your benefit is to create something that people can connect to on a human level. The rest will come naturally.

Tell a Story

Storytelling discusses your mission, it explains why you think your work is important and it also allows your brand to develop an identity. Giving your brand a backstory that details your purpose will attract audiences with the same values.

Have a Personality

If your brand were a person, what kind of person would it be? Think about what it would like, what it wouldn’t like, the kind of jokes your brand would tell and the way it would think. Maybe your brand is quirky, funny, sarcastic or cool. Your brand might be a likable jerk or a kind do-gooder. It could be a soccer mom, a straight-A student or a hipster bartender. Whatever your brand persona is, if it’s consistent with your concept, your audiences will find it entertaining and relatable.

Join the Conversation

The most personal way you can connect with your audience is to engage them. Responds to comments, tweets and messages. Thank your customers for good reviews and correct the bad ones.  Establish a relationship with influencers. React to current events. Get to know your audience and let them know that their thoughts are being heard, that their concerns are your concerns and that their feedback isn’t being sent into a vacuum. Listening is key to forming authentic connections.

Be Consistent

Consistency is not only important in maintaining your professionalism but it also shows that your actions and intentions are genuine and sincere. It establishes a sense of trust with your audience, which will ultimately lead to loyalty.
